Massa Lubrense Old Town
Massa Lubrense keeps the authentic pace of a coastal village while overlooking the Gulf of Naples and Capri. The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, panoramic terraces, and local shops offer an easy, peaceful outing close to the villa.
Massa Lubrense old town is just 2 km from Villa Lorelei, about a 5-minute walk or a couple of minutes by car: it is the municipality where the villa sits. A remarkably diverse territory covering the very tip of the Sorrentine Peninsula, it has 18 hamlets, kilometres of coastal trails, and unobstructed views over both the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno, and it is the easiest way to feel everyday life on the peninsula away from the tourist crowds.
The heart of town revolves around the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, a 16th-century former cathedral with an inlaid marble altar, perched on a panoramic square from which Capri is clearly visible on clear days, along with the Amalfi Coast. Climb to the Belvedere of the Benedictine Monastery, the highest viewpoint in the area, explore the medieval Annunziata hamlet with its Aragonese castle and early-Christian church, and browse the small grocers, bakeries, and bars, picking up local cheese, lemons, and olive oil.
Mamy Lucia's tip: this is our own village, so ask us where to eat, because the family-run trattorias here serve some of the most genuine food on the coast at honest prices. Time your visit for the late afternoon, when the light over Capri is at its best, and if you come on a Thursday don't miss the weekly market with its local produce: lemons, olive oil, mozzarella, and cheeses.
Quieter and greener than Sorrento itself, Massa Lubrense attracts travellers seeking authenticity over nightlife, and is especially charming in spring and autumn when the town belongs to its residents. It pairs naturally with a walk to Marina di Puolo or down to the sea, making a gentle, romantic outing on foot from the villa.
Good to know: Massa Lubrense is the gateway to dozens of marked walking trails across the peninsula, many starting right from the village and leading down to hidden coves. The tourist office on the main square hands out free trail maps. With its grocers, pharmacy, and bakeries, it is also the most convenient place near the villa to pick up anything you need for the day.
