Positano

The iconic pastel-colored village cascades down Amalfi Coast cliffs to Spiaggia Grande. Explore boutique-lined stairways, visit Santa Maria Assunta with its majolica dome, and pause for a sea-view lunch in one of Italy's most photographed coastal towns.

Positano is about an hour from Villa Lorelei, roughly 50 minutes by car along the panoramic SS163 or by SITA bus changing in Sorrento, and reachable by seasonal ferry in summer. It is the most photographed and sought-after village on the Amalfi Coast and an unforgettable full-day excursion.

The village is a vertical cascade of orange, pink, and white houses tumbling down toward the Spiaggia Grande, presided over by the iconic yellow-and-green majolica dome of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which inside holds a 12th-century Byzantine icon of the Black Madonna. Wander the stepped lanes of fashion boutiques, handmade sandals, and ceramics along Via dei Mulini, drop down to the 300 metres of the Spiaggia Grande, where the coastal ferries depart, or reach the smaller, quieter Fornillo beach loved by locals.

Mamy Lucia's tip: Positano is all stairs, so wear comfortable shoes and let the day flow downhill toward the sea. For a calmer swim choose Fornillo, and consider arriving by boat from Sorrento, as the views from the water are the most beautiful of all. Visit between May and June or in September to enjoy the colors without the peak summer crush, and close the day with a glass of local wine at sunset from a terrace bar before the drive back to the villa.

Good to know: cars are restricted in the center and traffic on the coast road can be slow in summer, so the ferry or bus is usually the most relaxed way in. Beach clubs on Spiaggia Grande charge for sunbeds, while the public stretch is free. Pair Positano with a stop in nearby Praiano or the cliffside town of Ravello for a fuller day on the Amalfi Coast.
