Path of the Gods

The Path of the Gods is the Amalfi Coast's signature panoramic hike, suspended above the sea between Bomerano and Nocelle. The route opens spectacular views over Positano, cliffs, and Capri; choose a clear day, wear proper footwear, and start in the morning.

The Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) is Italy's most famous trekking route, a panoramic trail suspended more than 600 metres above the sea, between sky and water over the Amalfi Coast. It starts at Bomerano (Agerola), about 50 minutes from Villa Lorelei by car via Pimonte or by SITA bus from Sorrento. The classic 7.8 km route runs downhill to Nocelle above Positano and takes 3 to 4 hours.

Its name comes from the ancient tradition that this was the path the gods walked to reach Mount Olympus, and walking it today it is easy to understand why. The trail traces old terraces and cliffs with continuous, spectacular views over Positano, the Li Galli islands, and Capri's Faraglioni on the horizon. From Nocelle you descend to Positano on foot down a long flight of steps (about 4 km, one hour), or catch the local bus down to spare your knees; alternatively, a shorter, steeper 5.5 km variant of about 2 hours starts from Praiano.

Mamy Lucia's tip: walk from Bomerano to Nocelle, not the reverse, so the route is almost entirely downhill and the views open ahead of you. Start early in the morning to beat the crowds, because in summer the trail is very busy, and bring trekking shoes, plenty of water, and sun protection, choosing a clear day for the best panoramas. It is not suitable for those with vertigo.

Spring and autumn are ideal, with mild temperatures and clear air, while midsummer can be hot and hazy on the exposed ridge. Easy-moderate in difficulty but hugely rewarding, it is a wonderful adventure for active couples and a fine prelude to a swim in Positano, from where you can return to Sorrento by ferry and then by bus to the villa for sunset.

Good to know: the trail is largely unshaded and one-directional, so plan transport at both ends, a bus or taxi to Bomerano and the bus from Nocelle or Positano back, because it is not a loop. Carry at least a litre of water per person, and avoid the walk in wet weather, when the path becomes slippery. A small daypack, sun protection, and proper footwear make all the difference.
